References:The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) new drug approval on Tuesday requires that the drug, rosuvastatin calcium, be prescribed to patients who have or have been diagnosed with: heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and/or high glucose.
Rosuvastatin is prescribed in combination with other drugs for patients with cardiovascular conditions, according to a letter from the FDA, released on Tuesday. The approval of rosuvastatin also includes the use of a cholesterol-lowering medication, metoprolol, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events.
Rosuvastatin is the latest in a string of prescription drugs to make the switch from statin to drug therapy, prompting the FDA to ask manufacturers to update the drug labels to reflect the new information.
The drug is also in the market for the first time in 20 years for cholesterol-lowering drugs, which are increasingly being prescribed to people who have not been prescribed a statin, as part of a effort to lower cholesterol.
A recent report by the FDA suggests that the new drug approval may be part of a comprehensive effort by insurers and drug manufacturers to make rosuvastatin less expensive and more widely available.
The FDA does not comment on drug labels but has stated that it will continue to monitor drug use and that it will make the final determination on whether the FDA is still reviewing the matter.
FDA’s latest announcement is its second in more than a decade, following the FDA’s approval of Lipitor and Crestor.
The agency is also considering whether to add another new drug to the list of drugs approved to treat patients with heart problems.
FDA approved rosuvastatin and its generic equivalent, fluvastatin, in January and has said it will continue to review the label changes. However, the agency still does not approve rosuvastatin for the patients with heart problems.
The FDA said that it is considering a separate, but related, drug application for the new drug, and it is considering other possible uses for rosuvastatin, including the possibility of treating other conditions.
The FDA also is weighing whether to approve the use of the anti-cholesterol medication lovastatin, which is currently in Phase III trials.

FDA also is considering the use of another cholesterol-lowering drug, simvastatin, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events.
FDA said that the new drug approval is based on new data from the FDA and will continue to follow the recommended drug label changes.
